Debra Russell is a talented, creative and results-oriented professional who is recognized nationally for pioneering efforts in the field of sign language interpretation and adult education.

Her demonstrated expertise in organizational and project management skills, program design, and interpreter assessment have benefited numerous organizations and individuals across Canada.

Debra is a University of Calgary Graduate Ph.D.. Distinguished honors and credentials include:

  • First Recipient of the David Peikoff Chair of Deafness Studies,
    Post-Doctoral Fellowship, University of Alberta (2002-2004).
  • Well-respected public speaking and adult education career at national and international forums, colleges, and professional industry conferences. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team building skills.
  • Consistently demonstrates leadership abilities in the field of interpretation, through education, policy creation, assessment development and organizational management efforts.
  • Recipient of Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship (1997-2000) & Killam Memorial Doctoral Scholarship (1998) & University of Calgary Dean's Doctoral Scholarship (1996).
  • Solid publication record spanning twenty years of contributions.

Debra RussellDLR Consulting was created out of 18 years of experience working as an ASL/English interpreter and interpreter-educator, working in the diverse communities of Edmonton, Toronto, Yellowknife, Calgary and Vancouver.

Grounded in pioneering educational opportunities for interpreters, Debra has offered over 200 workshops and written broadly about the field. As an active member of her professional associations, she is noted for her work as the national president of the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada, during the time when the Canadian Evaluation System was created.

She is passionate about quality and about ensuring Deaf and non-deaf consumers have access to the finest interpreters possible. After completing a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, and a dissertation which examined simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in the courts, it was time to focus on new ventures.

Out of a desire to see communities capture their talent and work together effectively, dlr consulting was born in 1998. DLR Consulting is based in Calgary, AB.
